The world’s second largest steelmaker from South Korea, Pohang Iron and Steel Company, well known as POSCO continues to sponsor 15 students from University of Malaya (UM) this year through its establishment of POSCO TJ Park Foundation. One of the main objectives of the TJ Park Foundation is to develop academic and cultural networks among Asian universities and nurture young Asians to become future leaders.
The award which is worth USD1000 (aproximately RM4130.00) is given out to each student with outstanding results who have the potential to become future leaders. The fellowship will help the recepients in funding their exchange program in Korea.
The award recipients are from several faculties in UM which are Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, Faculty of Languages and Linguistics, Faculty of Economics and Administration, Faculty of Education, Faculty of Business and Accountancy and Centre for Sport and Exercise Science.
According to Associate Vice-Chancellor (International), Associate Professor Dr. Yong Zulina Zubairi, the foundation has been sponsoring UM students for 12 years.
“We are ever grateful for this excellent friendship which has lasted since 2007”, said Yong.
“They have been so generous and have increased the scholarship amount from USD700 to USD 1000 per student since last year to mark the great friendship and alliance”, added Yong during the award ceremony held on 27 June 209 at the University of Malya Art Gallery.
Present at the event were President of Posco Malaysia, Mr. Noh Sung Rae, Director of Posco Malaysia, Mr. Moon Hyun Seok, Director of International Student Centre (ISC), Madam Salmi Marsita Shaari and Deans and Directors of various faculties.
